Highly Anticipated Documentary Gives Rare, Raw Look into the Life of an MMA Fighter

May 9th, 2012 –LOS ANGELES, CAL. – After three years of producing what is already creating buzz as one of the most important documentary films about Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to date, Filmmaker James Z. Feng and his team at RiLL Films announced the Los Angeles premiere of his highly anticipated documentary, titled Fight Life, following on the heels of its hugely successful, sold out premiere in San Francisco in January. "It's really the best documentary I've seen on fighting by far." said professional fighter Jake Shields, who the documentary chronicles. Jake Shields will be in attendance along with other famous MMA fighters at the premiere to show support for the film.

The motivation behind Feng’s Fight Life project started out as a mere curiosity. "I’m a huge fan of MMA and wanted to know more about the sport and MMA fighters," Feng says. "I was surprised that I couldn’t find any documentary films on such a popular sport and asked myself, ‘How come no one has explored this subject?’"

Feng set out to fill that void, and spent the subsequent three years developing Fight Life, interviewing some of MMA’s biggest names: Jake Shields, Nick Diaz, Gilbert Melendez, Big John McCarthy, Frank Shamrock, Chuck Liddell, Lyle Beerbohm, and more. Featuring narration by Sam Sheridan, author of A Fighter’s Heart, Fight Life delves into hard-hitting topics that are behind the scenes of this glamorized lifestyle.

This raw documentary brings to light the dark side of MMA, the side rarely shown to the public – the blood, sweat, and tears these modern day warriors endure as well as the financial and physical sacrifices they make daily to pursue their passion. "I gave up a stable career for this sport," one fighter shares. "I’d often ask, ‘Why am I doing this to myself?’ But then when I’m in the ring, I feel that rush coming back to me. ‘Oh, this is why!’"

Fight Life follows fighters from all over the country with diverse backgrounds, witnesses their challenges, and chronicles their paths – from being broke to not having health insurance– painting a clearer picture of what it takes to be a professional MMA fighter.

"We’re living the poor life, but we’re living our dream."
