Some people are training in Mixed Martial Arts or MMA because they like to compete, like to fight or because they like to get in good workouts.
Others though, are training MMA to learn self-defense. When they practice to fight they are learning tips and techniques that will help them defend themselves, if they where ever to get into trouble.
Avoiding a bad situation is the best course of action for anyone. However, there are many times in life that you will not be able to avoid a bad situation and if you can't verbally defuse the situation then it will be good if you learn how to defend yourself.
MMA is good for self-defense, because of the fact that it is comprised up of many different kinds of martial arts.
Since it is made up of many, you are better prepared to handle any situation that comes up. Jujitsu, kickboxing, wrestling, and judo are just some of the different martial arts that you learn when you learn MMA. Knowing how to do all of them is going to give you a big advantage over knowing just one.
If you were to only know how to box, you would be very good with your hands. However, you might have a problem if the person stays just outside of your hand reach or if they were able to take you down. Knowing how to kick with your legs would be of great use to you during this time.
The same can be true of knowing how to wrestle in MMA.
You might do much better if you were to only know muay Thai since they teach you how to use the eight points of your body as weapons. This means that you would be able to hurt someone with your hands, elbows, feet and knees to name a few. This would be a very good advantage to you.
The MMA problem would lie if you ended up on the ground. Not knowing how to defend yourself on the ground would lead you to some very big problems. You would be able to help yourself if you had knowledge of jujitsu.
As you see, you are setting yourself up for trouble if you only know one kind of martial arts. Learning how to do many different styles is going to help you out greatly and will enable you to defend yourself much better.
